X live Spirit World preview – “Rewarding Mindfulness”

  • Restore your grandparent’s old homestead
  • Mindfulness Exercises are needed to gain stamina
  • Discover mystical creatures

There are lots of games out there that try to gamify things like exercise and mindfulness, but often they are more on the “health app” side of things, instead of feeling like a real game. Spirit World however has hit the mark on creating a game that takes mindfulness and brings it into the gameplay.

Spirit World is a casual farming adventure game where you’ve got a massive plot of land that you are looking to clean up and farm – the classic “my grandparents died and I got their old, unwanted land” style of start. It’s something that’s been done in a number of mobile games in the past. You can then spend your days repairing your grandmother’s homestead, finding mythical creatures, and crafting artifacts for the villagers that live just outside your home.

Most of the game feels pretty straightforward; you can interact with items to clear off your farm and gain resources. This does cost energy, which is replenished over time. But, to earn back some of your stamina, you can also do mindfulness activities. As you uncover different areas of your homestead, more ways to be mindful appear. You can do a breathing exercise to gain back stamina or write down a worry and watch it burn up in a smiling fire, giving you the option to release it.

Seeing the cat in Spirit World

As you spend more time in Spirit World, you will start to uncover mystical creatures, who seem to be lurking just under the weeds and trees. These characters feel exciting and fun to find. It’s satisfying to help your fellow villagers with the items they need. The whole game feels quite fun. Mindfulness activities are increasing within schools and in society as a whole, so seeing a game that actually combines this in a gamified way seems like a no-brainer.
