- Lord of Nazarick is a strategy RPG based on the OVERLORD anime
- Assemble a deadly team from a roster of over 50 characters
- Engage in visually-stunning combat as you venture across iconic locations
Crunchyroll and A PLUS Japan recently launched Lord of Nazarick, the studios’ mobile, turn-based RPG, which allows players to immerse themselves in a faithful reimagining of the OVERLORD anime.
In the short-time we’ve played Lord of Nazarick, we can cheerfully say that the game does the anime justice – which for a franchise that’s lauded for its captivating story-telling, gripping fight sequences, and huge cast of charismatic characters is really saying something.
It would be impossible to list all the reasons that make the game a must-play RPG, but we’re going to do our best anyway. Here is part 1 of our reasons to play Lord of Nazarick.
For the epic OVERLORD stories
For those not familiar with OVERLORD, the franchise started life as a web novel before debuting as an anime series in 2017.
The story centres around the adventures of Momonga, an average salary man saddened by the news that his favourite MMORPG, Yggdrasil, is shutting down its servers. However, when turn-off time arrives the game instead transports Mononga into its magical world where his avatar – a far from average Undead with immense power – ascends to the title of Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown.
OVERLORD isn’t the first anime to kick-off the “trapped within a game” concept, but it is one of the most successful at it.
A big reason for that lies with the writing talents of its creator, Kugane Maruyama, whose love of Dungeons & Dragons inspired him to pen OVERLORD, crafting a story of interwoven-narratives that employ a huge cast of characters.
Lord of Nazarick lets players immerse themselves in some of the most epic stories that featured in the first season of the OVERLORD anime as they lead Momonga through his journey, culminating in a climactic battle between Ainz (Momonga) and one of his most loyal Floor Guardians.
A wealth of iconic characters:to choose from
OVERLORD’s cast is truly enormous, containing all walks of life from humanity, folklore, and fantasy. Whether it’s adventurers, villagers, noblemen, werewolves, vampires, or lizard people, almost every character you can imagine is depicted in OVERLORD. And, staying as faithful as possible to the anime, Lord of Nazarick features a great number of them.
Fans will be pleased to see the most standout personalities from the series present in the game, including: Albedo, Sebas, Shalltear, Cocytus, Aura, and Demiurge to name just a few. There are currently more than 50 characters from the OVERLORD franchise for you to recruit, with many more expected to be introduced with new updates.
Stunning strategic battles
This reason ties in once again with the sheer amount of characters Lord of Nazarick has to offer as battles are turn-based and require you to field the deadliest possible force, using characters from 5 classes (Mage, Knight, Warrior, Ranger, and Priest) and 3 unique attributes.
It’s important to note that you don’t need to be familiar with OVERLORD in order to have success in Lord of Nazarick. As long as you give careful consideration to your characters’ strengths and weaknesses, as well as boost your characters with new gear and skill upgrades, then you’ll rapidly start racking up victories.
The battles showcase beautifully choreographed animations that truly dazzle during the characters’ Ultimate Attacks. Witnessing Sebas unleash devastating combos or Aura Bella Fiora mount one of her beasts to charge into opponents is a thrilling sight, evoking the most iconic fighting sequences from the OVERLORD anime.
Immersive exploration
To close out this first set of reasons to play, we’ll end with the one you’ll spend most of your time enjoying: exploration.
In the same way that Lord of Nazarick pays tribute to OVERLORD by featuring so many of its popular characters, it also features some of the anime’s most iconic locations too.
Whether it’s basking in the awe of your Guardians in the Great Tomb of Nazarick, venturing to the frontier at Carne Village, or interacting with the inhabitants of E-Rantel, you’ll get to immerse yourself in the splendour of the first season’s most stunning locales. But of course, if you ever want to skip ahead then you can automatically navigate to the next quest point.
If we’ve managed to convince you to check out Lord of Nazarick for yourself then you can find the game available to download now from the App Store and Google Play.
You can also check out the OVERLORD anime while you’re at it via the Crunchyroll website, where you’ll also find exclusive OVERLORD offers and merch.
